I’m a big fan of Jasprit Bumrah’s attitude: Irfan Pathan

Indian cricket’s pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, is navigating a critical phase in his career, shouldering an increased workload in the absence of fellow fast bowler Mohammed Shami. Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan has weighed in on Bumrah’s current form, expressing confidence in his fitness and ability to handle the rigors of Test cricket.

Bumrah’s journey back to the pitch wasn’t an easy one. After sustaining a lower back stress fracture in 2022, he underwent surgery in New Zealand, keeping him away from competitive cricket for almost a year. His return to the game was marked by participation in the Ireland T20I series in August of the last year, and he has remained injury-free since.

However, the void left by Mohammed Shami, who has been sidelined due to a left-ankle injury sustained after his impressive performance in last year’s ODI World Cup, has amplified the pressure on Bumrah as he leads India’s attack in the ongoing five-match Test series against England. Pathan, speaking to PTI TV, acknowledged that while Shami’s absence impacts the team, it doesn’t necessarily increase Bumrah’s risk of injury. He praised Bumrah’s bowling action, which has been fine-tuned to reduce stress on his back. Bumrah has modified his run-up and follow-through, adjustments that lessen the load on his back and complement his distinctive slinging action.

The Bumrah-Shami duo has been instrumental in India’s bowling strategy, with Pathan highlighting their complementary roles. While Bumrah’s aggressive wicket-taking ability is well-known, Shami’s quieter yet effective presence has been a crucial part of their partnership. This dynamic duo not only reduces pressure on each other but also significantly boosts the team’s overall performance.

Pathan commended Bumrah’s dedication to Test cricket, a format that demands endurance and resilience. “I have been a big fan of Jasprit Bumrah’s attitude, especially in Test cricket, the way he has given priority to Test cricket despite injuries,” Pathan remarked, emphasizing the significance of Bumrah’s commitment to the game’s longest format.

India, having faced a setback with a 28-run loss to England in the first Test in Hyderabad, is gearing up for a comeback in the second match in Visakhapatnam. With the series poised for intense competition, Bumrah’s role as the lead pacer is more crucial than ever. His fitness and form will be key factors as India seeks to level the series.
