Southampton has completed the signing of promising goalkeeper Josh McNamara from Manchester City on a permanent deal. The 19-year-old shot-stopper has joined the Championship side on a two-year contract and will initially be integrated into Southampton’s Under-21s squad. McNamara’s acquisition was facilitated by Southampton’s new Director of Football, Jason Wilcox, who previously worked at the City Academy.

Expressing his delight after finalizing the move, McNamara said, “I’m thrilled for this new opportunity. It’s a fantastic feeling to join a club with such a rich history and a strong emphasis on development, from the academy all the way up to the first team. Southampton provides an excellent environment for learning and growth.”

Furthermore, McNamara expressed his eagerness to join the team and contribute to their success, stating, “I’m acquainted with some of the lads, and they’re performing exceptionally well. I’m excited to be part of the team and hope to make a positive impact this season.”

Having spent five years at Manchester City, McNamara progressed through the ranks after joining from Watford at a young age. He successfully earned a scholarship and later secured his first professional contract. Notably, McNamara was a member of City’s title-winning Under-18s squad during the 2021/22 season, narrowly edging out Southampton in a closely contested battle. McNamara’s move marks the second successive transfer of a Manchester City goalkeeper to the south coast. Last summer, Gavin Bazunu made the switch to Southampton and quickly established himself as their number one choice between the posts.

Manchester City has consistently demonstrated their ability to develop and generate profits from their young goalkeepers. James Trafford, who spent the previous season on loan at Bolton Wanderers, is reportedly on the verge of completing a permanent move to Burnley in a deal that could potentially reach £19 million.

As Southampton bolsters its squad with the addition of McNamara, the talented goalkeeper will have the opportunity to continue his development in a promising environment. The club’s strong reputation for nurturing young talent and their commitment to progression make it an ideal setting for McNamara’s continued growth in the world of football.
